See the world in a whole new way – God’s way
Following Jesus is a way of life.
Chances are, you were baptized as a baby. If so, confirmation is an opportunity for you as a teenager to affirm, or confirm, for yourself a decision your parents made for you. But before you can say “YES! I def want to follow Jesus”, it makes sense to learn more about what that means. So at West Vancouver United Church, we’ve broken it down for you in a way that makes sense. By the end, you affirm your desire to be part of the Church – not West Van United, not the United Church, but the Church – the one that Jesus started over 2000 years ago.
And that’s the best part of confirmation: when you learn to drive, getting your driver’s licence is hopefully not the last time you step into a car. Instead, it’s the beginning of a whole new adventure: driving to school, driving to work, road trips, etc. Well, confirmation is just like that (except there’s no stressful exam – haha); it’s not the end of your faith journey, but simply another milestone.

Confirmation starts Sunday, October 15 from 12pm to 1pm. Confirmation itself will take place on May 20, 2018, during the 10:00am service. The following dates are tentative:
MOVEMENT 1: WHO – October 15, 2017
If Christianity is a journey, who is it that we are even trying to follow? There’s God, there’s “the Father”, there’s Jesus, there’s the Holy Spirit, there’s the Trinity…who’s who, and where do we go from here?
MOVEMENT 2: HOW – November 19, 2017
Father, Son, and Spirit. Got it. Now what? People often talk about “following God”. What does that look like? How do we do that? A look at prayer, Scripture, community, and much more! Introduction to Examen and 360.
MOVEMENT 3: YOU – January 28, 2018
It’s hard to disconnect who you are from what you do. As they say, “everywhere you go, there you are!” God is at the core of your journey, but so are you and who God made you to be. But who is that, and how well do you know yourself?
MOVEMENT 4: BROKEN WORLD – February 18, 2018
Sin: it’s a loaded term we like to avoid. But the reality is, so many of us are aching, falling apart. And that brokenness impacts everything we do in this world. But God calls us to go beyond. Introduction to Church Leadership component.
MOVEMENT 5: LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR – April 8, 2018
Jesus said “love your neighbour as yourself”. But, love is an action, and to act, you need to first listen, and observe, and learn. We end by going on a field trip out into the community, simply being and learning. Runs from 12:00pm to 3:00pm – lunch included.
YOUTH RETREAT: end of April/early May (dates to be confirmed)
Our annual Youth retreat is an integral, though optional, part of the confirmation class. Participants should check their inbox for a code that gives them 10% discount when they register.
REHEARSAL: May 6, 2018
As Confirmation approaches, we gather one last time for 15 minutes after the service to go over what it will look like.
CONFIRMATION – May 20, 2018
By the time we get to confirmation, the choice is yours; is following Jesus something you want to do? Do you choose to affirm your parents’ decision to have you baptized? If the answer is no, chat about it with your parents. If the answer is yes, then you are confirmed during the service!
Please note that Confirmation, which is traditionally scheduled in conjunction with the celebration of Pentecost, coincides this year with the Victoria Day long weekend.
**A Note on Expectations
For us at West Vancouver United Church, Confirmation is more than a rite of passage – it’s a discipleship tool designed to help young people take ownership of their faith. Part of this involves being partnered with a mentor, 2 pieces of reflective work to be done at home, as well as a Church Leadership component that will be introduced later in the year once teens are more comfortable with the process.
Parents will also be asked to provide a short bio for those young people who successfully complete their year of discipleship prior to Confirmation.
